Making the NATO phonetic alphabet feel like second nature can be a bit of a struggle, especially if you don’t have ways of naturally adding it to your daily life. Once you’re in RTC, you’ll be expected to whip out a reply using the phonetic alphabet without any hesitation, so you should aim to master this skill well before you’re deployed. Otherwise, I predict a lot of punishment pushups in your future. My main method of conquering this task was what I call “The License Plate Game”. I imagine others have thought of this same technique before, since it’s simple and easily applicable to one’s daily life. The gist of the game is to quickly but clearly enunciate the letters and numbers of a visible license plate, using the NATO phonetic alphabet, of course. When in a vehicle, try to choose a license plate directly in front of you, or when stopped at a light. You can also practice when walking or sitting outside, by using parked cars. As a reminder, here are links to the guides on the actual alphabet and the numbers. Make sure to pay special attention to those digits that are pronounced or spelled unusually, like “Juliett” and “Niner”. Attached below is a link to a series of one-sheets you can download and print out to make physical flashcards. I highly suggest printing each page without altering the dimensions, so that the individual cards will be an even 3x5 inches. Most index cards come in that size, so if you purchase a pack you can glue them on to make a stack of more durable flash cards. Otherwise, just cut the front & back of each card as one piece and fold along the line. Also below is a link to a multi-page pdf of digital flashcards, so you can cycle through them on your phone. If you like this idea and would like more cards or for them to shuffle/randomize, let me know! I could look into making this feature in the near future once I’ve designed more flash cards.

Just Call Me Kilo
Although I'm a navy brat from a military family, I'm quite anxious and reserved. Therefore I'm not one to show my face and be overly social, but I like to help where I can! Ask me a question nicely if there's a topic you need help learning about and I'll see if I can address it. Archives
